Christina,

I am sorry to hear about the braces hurting your lips and gums. That is a big downside to braces and why Justin Bieber went with Invisalign to straighten his teeth. You should ask your Orthodontist for some wax to put on your braces. That will help cut down on the irritation inside your mouth.

Dear Justin,

Your question is an excellent one and there are 2 parts to my answer.

The bottom line is that Orthodontists are specialists who have undergone extensive training ( another 2-3 years fulltime) after graduating from Dental School. So no matter what a General Dentist may tell you, unless they have spent another 2- 3 years full-time studying tooth movement, they are always less qualified than an Orthodontist when it comes to moving teeth, correcting bite problems and providing an overall excellent orthodontic results.

Regarding Invisalign and training of Orthodontists versus General Dentists. There are many Orthodontists that have not embraced the Invisalign technology. Unfortunately, many of them will tell you that it won't work in your case. They are being honest, because in their hands, it will not.

The best way to find an Orthodontic provider is to go to the Invisalign website and type in your zip code. They will list the top providers (SUPER ELITE, Elite, then Premier) first. Those are the only doctors you should really consult with as they have the experience and expertise with Invisalign and will give you an honest opinion of whether you are a good candidate for treatment.

I always recommend an Orthodontist for tooth moving above a General Dentist because that is all they do!!! Wouldn't you want someone who was an expert, who has studied for an additional 2-3 years and invested in focusing on tooth movement only?

I wish you the best with your Invisalign treatment and thank you for your question.

Quick question, Just wondering, is the training that dentists and orthos go thru the same for invisalign? or would orthos actually go through more? Thanks!

Hi Ryan,
Your question is a good one. Unfortunately, it is not one that is easy to answer unless you have seen them for yourself. What may be "very visible" you may barely be visible to another. Now, if you were to compare to the alternative (BRACES), I would say they are barely visible.

Thanks for the question,
Dr. C.

Hello,
I've been researching Invisalign and I read about the attachments that the dentist/orthodontist has to put on your teeth. I read that they are very visible and I would just like some clarification on what they are, if they are really visible, and the role they play in teeth alignment.
Thank You
Rhyan

We recommend that a patient have a check-up by an Orthodontist at age 7. A majority of the time, they will not need any treatment until all the adult teeth are fully in place. However, if there is a problem, like crowded teeth, habits( thumb sucking) or a severe bite problem, treating the situation early with limited Orthodontics will prevent a more severe situation later that would take longer, involve extractions of teeth or even jaw surgery. If you child is seen on a regular basis by your family dentist, they typically will refer you when the time is right. If you have concerns and need more information check out www.braces.org for more information.

Wow, that seems so young now to be seen by orthodontist. We thought 10 or 12 was the standard age.
