When it comes to having orthodontic treatment, our patients, quite understandably, prefer discreet braces. Clear ceramic braces are exactly that. Not only are they effective in straightening your teeth and improving your smile, they achieve the results virtually unnoticed.
What are clear braces?
Clear braces are modelled on the traditional method of metal braces and use brackets, archwires and elastics to move your teeth into position. However, the difference between traditional metal braces and clear braces is that clear braces are made from a ceramic material. This ceramic material blends in with the colour of your teeth, making the braces incredibly discreet.
How do clear braces work?
Clear braces work just like traditional metal braces. The archwire which connects each of the brackets applies gentle force to move your teeth into position. Although they're not as easy to clean as Invisalign aligners which can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing, clear braces will remain discreet throughout your treatment as the ceramic material won't stain.
Benefits of clear braces
- Made from clear materials they are less visible on your teeth than metal braces.
- The brackets won't stain which means they will stay discreet throughout the duration of your treatment.
- Based on the method used by traditional metal braces, clear braces get great results.
While they are visually less prominent, clear braces do require more attention to oral hygiene as the ceramic brackets are larger and more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
Of course, another option for discreet orthodontic treatment is Invisalign. Find out more about these virtually invisible plastic aligners on our Invisalign page.
